International Women's Day

International Women’s Day

Next Friday, March 8th is International Women’s Day. In the past few years it has become one of my favorite days. I think it’s so important to honor the women near and far who have helped shape us. Over my lifetime I, personally, have had a tremendous shift from feeling like I needed to be “one of the boys” to being proud of the woman that I am. It’s so important that we show young women that we are stronger together. Women who lift each other up will always be stronger together.

Please join me for several fabulous International Women’s Day celebrations in our own backyard.

On Friday night we’ll have a panel discussion and photography exhibit of some of the women who own or run businesses at Lake Anne Plaza. Did you know over 75% of the businesses at Lake Anne are female owned or run? It’s an incredible group of unique women who bring their talents to Lake Anne. The event is free but we are suggesting attendees make a donation to Shelter House, a local non-profit supporting women in need. We’ll also have posters available for sale with the proceeds going to The Reston Historic Trust & Museum to support future women’s programs. Here are all the details of the event:

On Saturday at 9:30am, New Trail will have a women-only fundraising ride (Details here: The proceeds from the ride will go toward creating scholarships for women to participate in the Reston Runner’s Women’s Training Program. These women have overcome homelessness and/or domestic abuse. The scholarship recipients will also be able to participate in the Seize the Day 5k women’s race at the end of the training program. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here:
